FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Do you curate ears?

Recently, you may have heard a fashion forward trend of “curating ears!” We absolutely offer this as a service. In fact, we like to think of every piercing as a step in curation. Having a consultation about piercings you wish to get is absolutely encouraged to help you plan out an overall goal. A lot of what we do is determining what piercings are going to work best for you based on your individual anatomy, your aesthetics, and your inspirations.

What jewelry and materials does Old Traditions use?

Why do we use the materials that we do and nothing else?

When you get a new piercing it is very important to have proper material in your body.

A fresh piercing is a wound! Jewelry worn inside of that wound is exposed to all types of biomaterial!

Suitable metals used at Old Traditions:

Implant Grade Titanium, Gold, and Niobium

  • 14-18k Gold:

    • Nickel free or Palladium Based

    • Higher than 18k is not reccomended in body piercings as it can be scratched and cause irritation due to texture and excess bacteria

  • Niobium

    • The APP Recommends niobium to be as pure as possible - 99.9% Niobium or higher. This is sometimes referred to as “999 Niobium”

    • Similar to Titanium but is softer and heavier

    • Unlikely to react to bodily fluids, oxygen, or cleaning agents

  • Titanium:

    • The quality recommended for use by the Association of Professional piercers (APP) is titanium that is certified to meet ASTM or ISO standards for surgical implant applications.

      • ASTM F136 Compliant

      • ISO 5832-3 Compliant

      • Commercially pure ASTM F67 Compliant

    • Lightweight

    • Virtually nickel free

    • Corrosion resistant

    • Unlikely to react to biomaterial

    • Can be anodized to create a layer of colored oxide on the surface

    • All of our “posts,' i.e. labrets, curved/straight/circular barbells are made of Titanium

What does "anatomy dependant," mean?

Every individual body is slightly different. With any piercing, we need to make sure your anatomy is appropriate for the piercing you wish to get. For example, some ears may not have enough of a ridge for the piercing to heal properly. Some navels may not be shaped in a manner conducive to healing properly. This is something your piercer will look for prior to performing your piercing to ensure you are getting the best possible outcome for you as an individual.

We always suggest having a “back up plan,” as well as coming to the studio open minded to ideas and suggestions.

Do you offer genital piercing?

We absolutely offer genital piercing. Old Traditions prides itself as being well rounded and prepared for any person’s piercing aspirations. A consultation appointment is encouraged for any genital piercing to talk about goals and because these piercings are extremely anatomy dependent.

How many piercings can I get at once?

We don’t suggest having too many piercings done or healing at once. Your piercer can help you decide a good course of action with long term plans for many piercings by helping you choose what you’d like to do first based on your lifestyle, sleeping habits, etc.
